"I was
able to use the service to
determine if what my daughter is
reading is appropriate. It
turns out that there are a few
touchy subjects that I need to

she's reading now. The

today's busy parents." -

Influence What and How Your
Child Learns
According
to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the media has greater
access and time to shape children’s attitudes and behavior than
do parents and teachers. Children’s values and behavior are
therefore influenced by violence, sexuality, and the
glorification of bad behavior.
As a
parent, you can regain control over both what and how your child
learns. Character-based education utilizes books, movies, and
family experiences to instill the values you hold dear. Your
child will learn to appreciate loyalty, courage, and
perseverance, and internalize lessons about self-discipline,
responsibility, and compassion. In the process, they will
develop a passion for learning that will continue to serve them
throughout their lives.
Influencing what and how your child learns is a two-tiered
process. The first requires your commitment to be an active
participant in the learning process. This means that you do your
best to make reading an interactive experience that your child
can enjoy as much as they enjoy playing video games, and that
you give your child opportunities to ask questions about things
they don’t understand. It also means that you promote your
child’s creative thought processes, so that they learn to assess
what they see, critically appraise it, and think beyond what
they’re reading on the page or seeing on the screen. Finally,
being an active participant in your child’s learning process
means that you expose them to experiences that help bring what
they learn in books to life.
The second
tier in influencing what and how your child learns is choosing
books, movies, and family experiences that support
character-based education. Discovery Journey utilizes a team of
education experts to assist you in that effort.
Our Discovery Guides evaluate the content of each
children’s book and movie for positive and negative examples of
the following ten traits: self-discipline, compassion,
responsibility, friendship, work, courage, perseverance,
honesty, loyalty, and faith. The more strongly a book or movie
presents these values-oriented messages, the higher it scores.
Points are deducted for negative behavioral influences, such as
violence, bad language, nudity, sexual content, scary elements,
and the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. The result is a
Character Score, ranging from zero to 100, that you can use to
select media that have integral values messages.
We also
develop activities that coordinate with each book and movie that
we review. Our recipe and directions for making salt-water taffy
make the book, The Wedding Planner’s Daughter, come
alive. A covered wagon trip for the family gives added depth and
understanding to the book, Little House in Brookfield.
Our suggestions for home activities and family trips make the
printed words leap off the page and ignite your child’s
imagination.
It’s
imperative to counteract the negative influence that the media
has on your child’s life and engage in character-based
educational activities that will teach your child sophisticated
concepts like courage, loyalty, justice, respect, friendship,
honesty, and compassion. Subscribe today to Discovery Journey
and regain control over what and how your child learns.
